Like salt preserves flavour, Lucy Honor’s work preserves feeling. Salt brings together Honor’s recent photography, etchings, paintings and textile work. Across these mediums, she explores experiences, places and memories, and the ways they shape us.

Her hand embroidered textile pieces make the slow process of mending visible. The repeated movement of the needle in and out of the fabric is recorded in the accumulation of each stitch, making the works a record of the time and labour involved in repair. The blue cyanotype photographs flatten landscapes into textures and patterns. They reflect the feeling of looking back on a memory: flattened by time but detailed by remembering. Her copper plate etchings recount stories of instability through dreams and childhood experiences. The repeated process of printmaking reflects the way memories can be returned to and thought over again, while the physical act of etching gives form to the lasting impression of memory.

Honor’s works consider how we recall and retell personal experiences, and how we begin to mend after periods of instability. Salt speaks to her impulse to preserve moments, places and feelings, and to understand what they leave with us.
